Intercoolers, radiators, transmission coolers, and all of the various kinds of condensers on your EcoDiesel each serve one basic function, to cool whatever air or fluid is being passed through them. Due to friction, great amounts of heat are generated within an engine and the rest of your powertrain. Above various temperatures, fluids begin to lose the ability to complete their function as well as when they are at cooler temperatures. Further, as air temperatures increase, the molecules in the air lose their density, again, reducing the impact that the volumetric charge has on the engine.
In order to combat this rise in temperatures, your engine is equipped with numerous coolers. Unfortunately, most of these coolers are built with a top priority of minimizing cost, meaning the overall performance and capability suffers.
One of the best upgrades we have experienced on some of our own EcoDiesels is upgrading the intercooler and intercooler piping. Especially with a little tuning, the turbo is really wanting to produce additional boost and airflow, but is severely restricted once it hits the factory piping and miniscule intercooler inlet. You may not be aware, but the drivers side intercooler piping even has a large resonator built in, which really bottlenecks airflow.
By increasing the diameter of the piping, eliminating the factory intercooler pipe resonator, and installing a more efficient intercooler that features larger end tanks, you can really let the turbo breathe, resulting in an increase in power and efficiency.
