Allison has been supporting the Duramax equipped GM's since their infancy stage with the release of the first 2001 model. Over the years, the Allison has naturally progressed with the added power and features that the Duramax has produced. Beginning with the 2017 model year, the L5P engine was completely upgraded, now producing a whopping 445 horsepower, so it was evident that the transmission would need some finesse to support this newfound power. Fortunately, the upgrades list is short. For the most part, the only major change to the Allison from its predecessor is the torque converter.
However, as with ALL transmissions, they have their breaking point. We have found that prevention can be one of the key successors for a long lasting transmission, which is why we highly recommend adding a quality deep sump transmission pan and Schaeffer's brand transmission fluid to your Allison, no matter how you use it. And for those that are seeking higher horsepower or have accumulated some miles and are in need of heavier duty internals, we carry upgrades ranging from ATS, BD, and AFE torque converters to full blown billet transmissions that can handle ANYTHING you want to throw at them.
