Description
So you're like many and are tired of the noise, or maybe its just your neighbors complaints you're tired of. Either way, the Diamond Eye Big Dog 51" muffler may not be for everyone, but its a great solution for many. Many people have realized the very noticeable increase in sound level and drone when going from a 4" to a 5" exhaust system. Many people like the extra decibel, but some simply dread it, but require the 5" in order to keep EGT's at a tolerable level. If you're the latter, then you need a Big Dog Quiet Tone muffler. This enormous 51" muffler has the ability to drastically cut down on the interior and exterior sound to create a nearly "sleeper" truck. The only thing we caution those interested in this muffler.....MAKE SURE YOU'VE GOT ROOM FOR IT! Many extended cab short box, as well as other vehicles, simply don't have room for a muffler this long. But if you've got the room and are tired of the noise, install this muffler. It still performs every bit as good as all of Diamond Eye's other smaller mufflers, but with greater sound control. This muffler is directional, the domed side of the body is the outlet, the lipped side of the muffler is the inlet.

About Diamond Eye Performance
DIAMOND EYE EXHAUST

Diesel Power Products is extremely proud to be a leading Warehousing Distributor and Retail Outlet for Diamond Eye Performance diesel exhaust systems.

You'd be pretty hard pressed to find a better exhaust product for a better price in today's very competitive diesel truck exhaust market. Diamond Eye exhaust kits are made from either 16-gauge aluminized steel or high quality T-409 stainless steel. Most exhaust kits can be installed in about an hour with ordinary hand tools. To top it off, while other kits are made overseas, Diamond Eye builds their kits in-house in small-town Athena, Oregon.

Everybody knows the benefits of larger mandrel bent exhaust systems: lower EGTs, increased fuel economy, more horsepower and better sound. Whether you want Aluminized to save some money, Stainless Steel for better looks and longer life, or 4" or 5" kits, we have the diesel exhaust system to fit your needs. We encourage you to browse through our site to see our full selection of Diamond Eye. While youre at it, consider adding a BD exhaust brake along with your new Powerstroke, Duramax or Cummins exhaust. Order online or just give us a call. We'll be happy to help.

ALUMINIZED STEEL VS. T409 STAINLESS STEEL

Most of Diamond Eye's exhaust kits and components are available in your choice of aluminized or T409 stainless steel. So, what's the difference? First, aluminized steel is not aluminum, they're completely different materials. Aluminized steel is the most widely used metal in exhaust systems due to their affordability, durability, ease of manufacturing, and overall life expectancy. The physical appearance of aluminized steel is very similar to galvanized steel, an unpolished "metal" color. In contrast, T409 stainless steel is not the typical stainless steel many think of that features a mirror polish. That kind of stainless is called T304 and is considered the highest quality of stainless, but is also more difficult to work with. Now, which one is better? Well, that depends! As previously stated, aluminized is the most popular option probably due to its cost. However, depending on where you live, aluminized may be the best option anyways. In areas of high humidity especially, aluminized steel will rust and will traditionally rust completely through the metal. In constrast, it seems that T409 stainless will develop surface rust no matter what environment its in, but it will not rust through in the harshest of these environments.

4" OR 5" EXHAUST? WHICH ONE IS RIGHT?

That depends! Lets start with the most straight forward exhaust, a turbo back system. For the most part, there's no performance oriented reason that 5" exhaust is a better option compared to 4" until you're around 500 rear wheel horsepower. Up until that level, there's no power increase or any tangible exhaust gas temperature (EGT) reduction that warrants a 5" over a 4" system. That said, some prefer the louder, deeper tone that a 5" system produces over a 4". Now, once you pass 500 RWHP, we would recommend a 5" system to keep those exhaust temperatures down as much as possible. On the flip side, when comparing exhaust with a catalyst in line, such as a catalytic converter or a diesel particular filter (DPF), its arguable to go directly to a 5" system even if you're under 500 horsepower in order to free up as much exhaust restriction as possible.

Big dog!

"This muffler worked as intended. What has it turned out, it actually was too quiet for my taste, and I decided to try something a little bit smaller. Nothing against this muffler however, it worked excellently! If I ever decided to quiet my truck down to the level where it sounded stock, I would absolutely put it back on."

Great muffler

"Ordered this to quiet down my 5” exhaust. It worked great! Noticeable lower noise and drone on the highway."

Q&A

What is the muffler made out of? Is it stainless steel?
These are going to be an Aluminized material.
This is a review not a question. I had dual 7" stacks on my 06 Megacab Cummins for years. If I was putting a muffler on my truck it was going to be the quietest one available. The 5in version does fit on a Megacab after cutting a little off the pipe that goes over the axle. I did lose a little performance but being able to have a conversation while driving and not covering everything in black crap is totally worth it. It sounds good too.
Thanks Bill. This is definitely one of the quietest mufflers available.
How does this muffler compare sound and loudness wise to the Donaldson M090544?
The Diamond Eye Big Dog was essentially designed to be a competing muffler for the 51" Donaldson, so I would say they're very comparable.
Is it quieter then the mbrp quite tone?
Good question thanks for asking. The DBs are actually going to be equal for each per the manufactures depending on what other mod have been done. Thank you.
is this muffler considered to be quieter then a donaldson m085421 or m090544?
Based on design and overall length, the DE Big Dog muffler will likely be a bit quieter than say a Donaldson M085421.
