Description
No, this is not just another rebuilt box like what you'll get at your local auto parts store! These steering boxes are built in Washington state and offer unmatched steering control and longevity. We have personally run several brands and have had the best results to date with the Red-Head.IMPORTANT: Early 2000 model year applications will feature a 32-spline sector, whereas late models will have a 36-spline sector. Please confirm your spline count before ordering. If you have a 32 spline, this box will fit your application, however, if you have a 36 spline, it will not. We also offer a 36-spline option. This gearbox allows you to retain the factory steering shaft, as well as the stock pitman arm. This is a major advantage, especially for those with lifted trucks with dropped pitman arms, you will not have to change your pitman arm.IMPORTANT NOTES: There is a mid-model year split in 2000, please determine whether you have the early or later model steering box before ordering by counting the splines on the shaft. The early models have 32 splines, while the late ones have 36 splines. Thus, the Red-Head #2764 will feature 32 splines, whereas the #2764NBS will have 36. Early model 1997 trucks that feature the 2-bolt oval top cover on the steering gearbox will use the #2757 box, same as 1980-1996. Please see the Related Products section below for this steering box. You have the option for us to include a pre-paid return label with the shipment for ease of returning your core. With this option, you will merely need to drop the re-packaged core with the accompanying shipping label at a FedEx drop-off. Otherwise, it will be your responsibility to supply your means of returning the core. Pre-paid return label option is only applicable to the lower 48 contiguous United States. Please contact us if you have any questions. Cores with broken shafts or cases will receive partial or no core refund.

About Red-Head Steering Gears Inc.
Browse Red Head Steering Gears Online by Make, Model, and Year. One of the most prevalent issues with heavy duty, diesel powered trucks, especially as they accrue some miles, is sloppy steering. And its no wonder, most of us install larger tires, haul a considerable amount of weight, periodically use them offroad, and even put snowplows on the front. All of these put considerable stress on your steering components. All of those stresses coupled with the fact that the OEM steering gears, or basically anything you find at your local parts store, could be considered absolute garbage means that the majority of us are driving around with loose, wandering steering that must be constantly corrected in order to keep the truck in your lane. That is, unless youve upgraded your Cummins, Powerstroke, or Duramax with a Redhead!

Red-Head Steering Gears was founded in 1981 by Seattle area automotive entrepreneur, Warren Foster, who also founded Foster's Service in Georgetown, WA (now Foster's Frame & Axle) and T 'n' W Pumps in Georgetown, WA (now Foster & Snyder in Pingree, ND).

The business was purchased by Tom Foster and then Harvey Foster, both nephews of Warren. Tom is now retired in Arizona. Harvey moved to Seattle in 1979 to go to work for Warren in his frame and axle business. This knowledge of front ends has been very helpful in diagnosing steering problems.

Harvey worked at the frame and axle shop for 6 1/2 years before joining Tom at Red-Head. Harvey has built and tested between 43,000 and 47,000 steering gears in the past 21 years. This business has had and continues to have a number of other great employees, all family members.

Why we carry Red Head Steering Gears.....
As anybody that deals with us on a regular basis knows already...we want the best for our customers. As most people with a Dodge truck realize, the stock steering gear box leaves a lot to be desired. It was no different on our 2005 Dodge (3 gearboxes in the first 25,000 miles) or our 2007 Dodge (3 gearboxes in 75,000 miles). We have been searching for the answer to the gearbox dilemma and after testing a few other aftermarket boxes have settled on Red Head as being the best. Steering is smooth, effortless AND they are built to last. But it doesn't stop with upgraded Dodge boxes, they build upgraded boxes for nearly every application and we've had nothing but positive feedback on every unit. Red Head gets our Seal of Approval!

Excellent Product

"Very glad I purchased this steering box for my 97 F350. The steering in my truck was awful with a ton of play in the wheel. I know I have wore out steering linkage on a 4” lift but even with just this high quality box it tightened it up quite a bit. Easy to follow directions, high quality coating, and no adjustments needed! It’s not the cheapest but you get what you pay for."

Tyler Q. (5/5)

Never again

"Leaked from day one. By the time i could down the pickup and determine it was the box and not a line it was out of warranty so all I got was good luck, After determining there was a missing o-ring the leak stopped. . . . . . . . for a while. i have had it out 4 times and can not keep the sector bolts tight even with copious amounts of cleaning and red Locktite on the bolts. never again."

Best Steering Box!

"I've had this gearbox on the truck for about 7 months now. What a difference this Redhead made. My OEM gearbox was loose and I was constantly over correcting while driving especially when pulling heavy loads. With this Redhead my steering is nice and straight. The truck is fun to drive again taking curves and at higher speeds than I could with my old one. Install was not very hard took me about 2-3 hours to complete for being the first steering box I've ever replaced. Great box. Wish I would have installed this box a lot sooner. Will definitely buy another when needed."

Caleb S. (5/5)

Great

"My e99 f350 drw truck was a hassle to drive before swapping to the red head gearbox. I Struggled to keep it between the lines with how loose the old box was. Now I enjoy driving the truck again. Truck stays straight, steering is tight but turns with one finger on the wheel. I should of installed this box along time ago. I would definitely buy this gearbox again."

Q&A

I have a 1996 F350 with the factory 2 bolt cover box. I plan on converting the truck to Hydroboost steering/braking using 1997 fsuperduty components (all new lines, adding a drop pitman arm, borgeson shaft, etc). When I do that is there a benefit to the 4 bolt cover box? Strength, reliability, etc? I know sending a 2 bolt cover box isn't a proper core for a 4 bolt cover box but would I get some credit for it? Thanks for any insight.
Core credit will be lower on the 2 bolt boxes yes, those only receive a $100 core credit. As for strength, reliability, they are similar in construction shy of the top cap. I am not aware of any mechanical advantage. -AW.

I have 1997 F350 powerstroke, do I need to count the splines before ordering?, I am in the process of replacing ball joints and steering components including the pitman arm. I don't see when ordering the pitman that the spline count is requested. I have a 4- 6"" lift I believe
On a 1997 we just need to know if it is a 2-bolt top cover where the adjuster is or 4-bolt. That will tell us all we need to know. DppSands
