Description
No, this is not just another rebuilt box like what you'll get at your local auto parts store! These steering boxes are built in Washington state and offer unmatched steering control and longevity. We have personally run several brands and have had the best results to date with the Red-Head.This gearbox allows you to retain the factory steering shaft, as well as the stock pitman arm. This is a major advantage, especially for those with lifted trucks with dropped pitman arms, you will not have to change your pitman arm. IMPORTANT NOTES: This box is designed specifically for trucks without adaptive steering. Trucks with adaptive steering use a gearbox that has a different steering ratio. If the customer installs this gear with the wrong ratio, they will have issues with sensors and even run the risk of damaging or breaking their clock spring.  You have the option for us to include a pre-paid return label with the shipment for ease of returning your core. With this option, you will merely need to drop the re-packaged core with the accompanying shipping label at a FedEx drop-off. Otherwise, it will be your responsibility to supply your means of returning the core. Pre-paid return label option is only applicable to the lower 48 contiguous United States. Please contact us if you have any questions. Cores with broken shafts or cases will receive partial or no core refund.

About Red-Head Steering Gears Inc.
Browse Red Head Steering Gears Online by Make, Model, and Year. One of the most prevalent issues with heavy duty, diesel powered trucks, especially as they accrue some miles, is sloppy steering. And its no wonder, most of us install larger tires, haul a considerable amount of weight, periodically use them offroad, and even put snowplows on the front. All of these put considerable stress on your steering components. All of those stresses coupled with the fact that the OEM steering gears, or basically anything you find at your local parts store, could be considered absolute garbage means that the majority of us are driving around with loose, wandering steering that must be constantly corrected in order to keep the truck in your lane. That is, unless youve upgraded your Cummins, Powerstroke, or Duramax with a Redhead!

Red-Head Steering Gears was founded in 1981 by Seattle area automotive entrepreneur, Warren Foster, who also founded Foster's Service in Georgetown, WA (now Foster's Frame & Axle) and T 'n' W Pumps in Georgetown, WA (now Foster & Snyder in Pingree, ND).

The business was purchased by Tom Foster and then Harvey Foster, both nephews of Warren. Tom is now retired in Arizona. Harvey moved to Seattle in 1979 to go to work for Warren in his frame and axle business. This knowledge of front ends has been very helpful in diagnosing steering problems.

Harvey worked at the frame and axle shop for 6 1/2 years before joining Tom at Red-Head. Harvey has built and tested between 43,000 and 47,000 steering gears in the past 21 years. This business has had and continues to have a number of other great employees, all family members.

Why we carry Red Head Steering Gears.....
As anybody that deals with us on a regular basis knows already...we want the best for our customers. As most people with a Dodge truck realize, the stock steering gear box leaves a lot to be desired. It was no different on our 2005 Dodge (3 gearboxes in the first 25,000 miles) or our 2007 Dodge (3 gearboxes in 75,000 miles). We have been searching for the answer to the gearbox dilemma and after testing a few other aftermarket boxes have settled on Red Head as being the best. Steering is smooth, effortless AND they are built to last. But it doesn't stop with upgraded Dodge boxes, they build upgraded boxes for nearly every application and we've had nothing but positive feedback on every unit. Red Head gets our Seal of Approval!

Dangerous deadzone

"Purchased in February 2025; it is now February 2026. I have experienced a significant and progressive loss of steering control from this steering box. Around September 2025, I began noticing a dead zone developing in the steering wheel. Since then, the issue has worsened to the point where there is now dangerously little to no steering response from the 12 o’clock position to approximately 4 o’clock. To drive straight, the steering wheel must be turned noticeably to the right. To rule out other causes, I have had the vehicle professionally aligned and have replaced the tie rods and drag link. Despite these repairs, the steering issue persists, strongly indicating an internal failure of the steering box itself. Given the short time in service and the severity of the failure, this appears to be a premature defect. After further research, I have also found multiple reports online describing similar failures of this steering box within months to a year of installation. At this point, the vehicle is unsafe to operate. I am hesitant to attempt any adjustment to the steering box, as I do not want to risk voiding any existing warranty. I am seeking guidance on warranty coverage and next steps for repair or replacement."

Money Well Spent

"I put 200,000 km's on stock steering box with 8 inch lift and 40 inch boots so as you can imagine the amount of play in my steering wheel was ridiculous to say the least. I Hum'd and Haw'd about just swapping out with a rebuilt stocky to save some bucks and decided to pull the trigger on a Redhead. More expensive. . . yes. Worth every penny. . . HELL YES!! Super stoked I chose not to settle with the cheapo. My truck steers better now then the day I drove it off the lot, the difference is literally like night and day. I highly recommend purchasing a Redhead to anyone who is in the market for new steering box."

2013 Ford F250 Red Head Gear Box

"Best thing I’ve added to the truck since I’ve owned it. Made all the difference in the world in the steering. My truck is lifted 6 inches high and it drives like a OEM truck now. Kudos to the Redhead engineers. Product outperformed my expectations. Also, thank you to Diesel Power products customer service for answering a few questions before ordering this part. Very knowledgeable very professional greatly appreciate it."

Red Head Gear Box

"I was looking for a replacement steering gear for my truck and didn’t want just a run of the mill reman. I came across Red Head and read countless reviews and all were positive. I watched videos of before and after and I was impressed. I was more impressed with how they overbuild them. Once I installed it and took it for a ride I was blown away. It truly does feel like a new truck! Only now it will take the abuse a 3/4T truck is supposed to be able to handle. Cost a bit more but worth every cent more in cost! Keep up the good work and if you’re on the fence about getting one, rest assured you will not regret it!"

Q&A

What kit do u recommend for the hydraulic steer surely you have a professional choice
We recommend the Redhead gear boxes that are drilled and tapped for hydraulics, or the PSC gear boxes.
Does this fit 2017-2021 F450 super duty
Unfortunately we don't have a definitive answer here. If the newer trucks were anything like the older chassis then it could have a F250/350 box or be a different 450/550 only box. I would contact your dealer with your vin and a part number and have them compare that to a F350 Pickup and see if they match. -Sands
I was wondering, can i install this product now and plug the hydro-assist ports until i install the rest of the hydro-assist system at a later date, or will this cause damage to the unit?
Yes, if selected, the box will come with the additional ports and plugs if you are not utilizing the hydro assist right away.
Is this part in stock?
Yes they are ready to ship. SA
