Description
We are proud to offer Red-Head replacement steering gear boxes for the second-generation heavy-duty Dodge Rams! No, this is not just another rebuilt box like what you'll get at your local auto parts store! These steering boxes are built in Washington state and offer unmatched steering control and longevity. We have personally run several brands and have had the best results to date with the Red-Head. From the factory, the 4x4 diesel applications came with a four turn gear box. What this means is that lock-to-lock,you'l typically get 4-4.5 turns of the steering wheel. The half ton trucks came with a three turn box, resulting in 3-3.5 rotations. Many aftermarket boxes you'll find at your local parts store, or other, will be a three turn which has been found to not be as advantageous, especially those with larger than stock tires. Red-Head has been able to maintain a four turn box and what you'll be getting here. Now, its worth noting, however, if you return a three turn gearbox as your core, you will likely receive a reduced core charge refund since its not a "like for like" return. This gearbox allows you to retain the factory steering shaft, as well as the stock pitman arm. This is a major advantage, especially for those with lifted trucks with dropped pitman arms, you will not have to change your pitman arm. HYDRAULIC STEERING ASSIST PORTS OPTION: Red-Head offers a porting option for those who are either already running a hydraulic assist steering, or plan to in the future. If you choose to make this upgrade to the box, your gearbox will come with two pre-drilled and tapped ports with plugs. For clarification, hydraulic assist is NOT something your vehicle would have come from the factory with, rather it is an upgrade that adds a hydraulic ram to the steering linkage to aid in steering. Most vehicles do NOT have this option, thus if you are unsure if you have it, you probably do not. IMPORTANT NOTE: You have the option for us to include a pre-paid return label with the shipment for ease of returning your core. With this option, you will merely need to drop the re-packaged core with the accompanying shipping label at a FedEx drop-off. Otherwise, it will be your responsibility to supply your means of returning the core. Pre-paid return label option is only applicable to the lower 48 contiguous United States. Please contact us if you have any questions. Cores with broken shafts or cases will receive partial or no core refund, as well as returning a 3 turn instead of a 4 turn box. EVIDENCE: If you'd like additional third-party evidence as to what goes into a Red-Head gearbox or why this is the best gearbox for your truck, and how much of an impact it will make in your driving experience.

About Red-Head Steering Gears Inc.
Browse Red Head Steering Gears Online by Make, Model, and Year. One of the most prevalent issues with heavy duty, diesel powered trucks, especially as they accrue some miles, is sloppy steering. And its no wonder, most of us install larger tires, haul a considerable amount of weight, periodically use them offroad, and even put snowplows on the front. All of these put considerable stress on your steering components. All of those stresses coupled with the fact that the OEM steering gears, or basically anything you find at your local parts store, could be considered absolute garbage means that the majority of us are driving around with loose, wandering steering that must be constantly corrected in order to keep the truck in your lane. That is, unless youve upgraded your Cummins, Powerstroke, or Duramax with a Redhead!

Red-Head Steering Gears was founded in 1981 by Seattle area automotive entrepreneur, Warren Foster, who also founded Foster's Service in Georgetown, WA (now Foster's Frame & Axle) and T 'n' W Pumps in Georgetown, WA (now Foster & Snyder in Pingree, ND).

The business was purchased by Tom Foster and then Harvey Foster, both nephews of Warren. Tom is now retired in Arizona. Harvey moved to Seattle in 1979 to go to work for Warren in his frame and axle business. This knowledge of front ends has been very helpful in diagnosing steering problems.

Harvey worked at the frame and axle shop for 6 1/2 years before joining Tom at Red-Head. Harvey has built and tested between 43,000 and 47,000 steering gears in the past 21 years. This business has had and continues to have a number of other great employees, all family members.

Why we carry Red Head Steering Gears.....
As anybody that deals with us on a regular basis knows already...we want the best for our customers. As most people with a Dodge truck realize, the stock steering gear box leaves a lot to be desired. It was no different on our 2005 Dodge (3 gearboxes in the first 25,000 miles) or our 2007 Dodge (3 gearboxes in 75,000 miles). We have been searching for the answer to the gearbox dilemma and after testing a few other aftermarket boxes have settled on Red Head as being the best. Steering is smooth, effortless AND they are built to last. But it doesn't stop with upgraded Dodge boxes, they build upgraded boxes for nearly every application and we've had nothing but positive feedback on every unit. Red Head gets our Seal of Approval!

Reviews

Steering leaks

"I replaced my stick steering pump on a 2001 dodge ram 2500 5. 9 cummins. I replaced it due to a possible leak I found on the stock one. The red head steering is an absolute monster i used to have to constantly correct the truck while driving and braking and now I dont. **HIGHLY RECOMMEND*** changing all fluid lines while you are changing the pump. Not sure if this pump added pressure but I had leaks coming from all the flex hoses from the fittings. Also if you are changing it on an older truck, just get a new Pittman arm, you will thank me later."

Failed two years in

"Two year old RedHead steering box now severly leaking out of the seal at the pitman arm attachment point. Out of warranty. Made in USA junk. Good thing I never sent the old one in for the core (laziness pays off for once), it's going back in the truck."

Ehuffaker (1/5)

Disappointed unfortunately

"I looked all over and this seemed to be the only viable option. I replaced the steering box along with the whole front end and a new steering shaft, and the box is still the source of the slack in my steering. Very disappointed for how expensive this thing was, hoping to find a different option in the future."

Kravets (1/5)

2001 dodge

"I have had a red head on my truck for a little over two years and it has already started leaking around the lower pitman arm shaft"

Austin C. (2/5)

No better than a Napa box

"I’ve only put 4 thousand on it and the road owns the pickup Already I might as well have saved myself the money and just got a cheap one"

Mason H. (1/5)

Josh

"The only thing that would concern me is the 12-month warranty seems like if it was that good of a box it would have more than a 12-month warranty little skeptical of buying it"

Josh (1/5)

Tight and Right

"I had recently replace my gearbox on my 01 Ram 2500 and wow did it ever get sloppy. Found Red Head gear boxes online and was not disappointed. Steering is tight again like when the truck was brand new. Well worth the money"

David B. (5/5)

I do not recommend it

"It worked well for about 2 months, after 6 months it's more sloppy and loose than my 20 year old factory one, not worth it."

Heriberto R. (1/5)

The delivery was quick and

"The delivery was quick and the steering box seems to be a quality well working steering box"

Nicholas M. (5/5)

Having never purchased truck parts

"Having never purchased truck parts on line. . . boy was I surprised! Ordering, shipping, returning core and $$$ back on my Credit Card ALL EFFORTLESS. Thank you for your professional service."

Q&A

Hello I have a 1997 Dodge Ram 2500 5.9L 4x4. Would this gear box fit directly, I read something about adding extra ports for a hydraulic ram assist, not sure what that means. If you could just give me the part number so I can order it from you guys that would be great.
Thanks for asking, please give one of our experts a call and we can guide you through what will work best for you truck. Thank you. 888-993-4373 Mon-Fri 6-6 PST
Hello i have a 1996 2500 12v 2wd, would this box work for it? Its a 4 turn from lock to lock.
Yes that box will bolt on same as the 4wd models.
I have a 99 dodge 3500 4x4 ,dually, 5.9 L. This truck has always had sloppy steering. Nothing I have found has fixed this problem. Will the Red Head steering box fix this losse steering problem alone. If not, will it fix it with your stabilizer system....thankyou
This is definitely a piece of the puzzle. Their are typically a few components to check on the front end to ensure that all your steering components are within spec. -Mark
I have a 1999 3500 2wd truck would this product RED-HEAD STEERING GEAR BOX 94-02 DODGE RAM work on my vehicle I can not find anything that specifies if there is a different between the 2wd and 4wd steering gear
There should not be any difference from 2WD to 4WD the biggest difference will be gas from diesel. Ensure that you double check and see if your steering wheel is a 4 turn or 3 turn from lock to lock. The box on our website is a 4 turn box. -Mark
I have an 01 dodge 2500 cummins with a red head gear box already on it. The seal around the output shaft that the pitman arm goes on is leaking. How much is it to rebuild or reseal it? Do you sell a seal kit?
We do not offer those kit's for these steering gearboxes. You will want to reach out to Red Head directly for them to reseal that box. -Mark
