Description
The leak at the dipstick flange on the side of the engine oil pan is a well known issue with the 7.3 Powerstroke engine. The leak develops because the factory O-ring mounted inside the adapter swells over time due to exposure to oil. As the seal swells it actually deforms the inner piece of the adapter causing the outer nut to loosen. Some people will try tightening the nut to stop the leak and that can work temporarily, but it only deforms the inner piece more. The factory repair for this leak is to remove the pan and replace the whole unit from the inside of the pan. This is a time consuming and expensive repair. This kit from 73dipstick.com reuses the internal part and moves the seal to the outside of the pan. Nothing left abandoned inside the pan and no welding, creating a permanent repair.

IMPORTANT NOTE:
  • It has been determined that this kit only works with Factory or Dorman internal dipstick flanges. If the internal part has ever been replaced with a part not made by these two manufacturers, this kit may not work. Also,if the dipstick nut has ever been over tightened, and the threads are pulled, you could still end up with a small leak.

7. 3 dipstick repair

"A one our job turned into a multi day job, I didn't want to drop my dipstick tube holder into my oil pan. I tried this kit and it absolutely would not work. The aluminum nut would thread onto my tube holder, so I ended up buying a completely different kit and have heard very little from the company about this. My advice, just drop the tube holder and put the adapter on. Wag easier and no crappie aluminum nut to ruin your day."

2nd Time Around

"My first fix was made with the purchase of OEM seal earlier this year only to have leak to return 6months later. My next step I then purchased the Dipstick Fix kit. I found a better YouTube video on installation which is a clean install. Followed the instructions but added a step by draining the oil down as the oil level is right below dipstick mount. As an added help, I twisted . 040 safety wire about 12" long forming a small hook on one end to insert into mount to grab inner bottom lip of dipstick mount. I purchased a round metal brush kit from Harbor Freight slightly bending one in the middle of a brush to ensure tightness holding and inserted holding wire onto inner lip of mount. This is a double security to insure not losing mount into oil pan. When removing large mount nut, mount tends to dip into oil if level is not drained down a little. This helps in cleaning the oil pan and especially the mount for sealant supplied with kit to adhere to. Install went very good with no mess on 11-01-2025. I let it sit for 6hrs before I relocated truck to driveway from garage. No leakage noted and let cure set until next day after 24hrs. Its is now 2wks later since install and no leakage noted. ***www.youtube.***/watch?v=P9WnKWnusHs&t=10s"

My 2000 F250 7. 3 Project

"I changed the OEM Oring about 6mon ago and it started leaking again. Opted to purchase a Dipstick Fix Kit. The other options sold were not the direction I wanted to go. Found at Harbor Freight a package of tubing metal brushes of 3 different sizes. After removing dipstick tube from oil pan mount, then I took . 040 safety wire double twisting and forming a small fishhook size at one end to fit down thru mount to hook on inner lip, next I took the metal tubing brush that fits in mount putting a small bend in the middle of the brush sliding in against the wire hook I made. This was nice & snug; both served as double security to prevent mount from diving into oil pan. Next, I have an oil pan drain cock for which I drained the oil level down a little so when removing large dipstick mount nut the mount tends to dip inside getting oily, oil is right below mounting hole. This helps when cleaning area for new kit install. This is when OEM Oring can be removed. This Oring was very flexible & swollen. I admire the kid in the making of the video supplied here on DP Diesel but its a little messy and sloppy. There is a better YouTube video put out by ThoroughBred Diesel by the maker of this fix. One more thing, when I went to install the new nut, I found that it didn't thread onto dipstick mount as easy as depicted in video. Upon inspection of the original nut, I found it warped which tells me the mount is also a little distorted. I could get it started but had to wrench it on all the way until it finally came in contact & forcing sealant into gaps. After sitting for 24hrs, started truck and drove around for a while, no leakage visible."
