Description
If your steering needs an upgrade from running oversized tires, offroading, or your stock gearbox is just simply worn out and you demand nothing but the best, then a Red-Head gearbox should be your next move. While the standard Red-Heads we offer outperform the stock box in every way, their Extreme Duty models are built to handle anything you can throw at them while still being completely suitable for a daily driver with stock-sized tires.*IMPORTANT SEE APPLICATION NOTES BELOW.Featuring many of the same upgrades as the standard Red-Head box for improved steering, the Extreme Duty models feature a larger internal piston, as well as a larger sector shaft compared to the standard models. The larger piston means that more fluid can be displaced, providing easier "push and pull" of your steering linkage. As far as the shaft, bigger is nearly always better in terms of strength, so you're less likely to twist or break the shaft even under the harshest of conditions. The sector shaft will taper down to the stock size, however, so you're able to retain your existing pitman arm. This is a major advantage, especially for those with lifted trucks with dropped pitman arms, as you will not have to change your pitman arm.IMPORTANT NOTES: If you have a 2008 model year, please check the vehicle build date located on the driver's side front door. If the vehicle is built 07/07 or prior, you will need a different gearbox, Red-Head part number 2768 (See Related Products section) that is designated as fitment of 2005-2007 model years. If you have a 2010 model year, please check the vehicle build date located on the driver's side front door. If the vehicle is built 03/10 or later, you will need a different gearbox, Red-Head part number 2773 (See Related Products section) that is designated as fitment for the 2011-2016 model years. You have the option for us to include a pre-paid return label with the shipment for ease of returning your core. With this option, you will merely need to drop the re-packaged core with the accompanying shipping label at a FedEx drop-off. Otherwise, it will be your responsibility to supply your means of returning the core. Pre-paid return label option is only applicable to the lower 48 contiguous United States. Please contact us if you have any questions. Cores with broken shafts or cases will receive partial or no core refund.

About Red-Head Steering Gears Inc.
Browse Red Head Steering Gears Online by Make, Model, and Year. One of the most prevalent issues with heavy duty, diesel powered trucks, especially as they accrue some miles, is sloppy steering. And its no wonder, most of us install larger tires, haul a considerable amount of weight, periodically use them offroad, and even put snowplows on the front. All of these put considerable stress on your steering components. All of those stresses coupled with the fact that the OEM steering gears, or basically anything you find at your local parts store, could be considered absolute garbage means that the majority of us are driving around with loose, wandering steering that must be constantly corrected in order to keep the truck in your lane. That is, unless youve upgraded your Cummins, Powerstroke, or Duramax with a Redhead!

Red-Head Steering Gears was founded in 1981 by Seattle area automotive entrepreneur, Warren Foster, who also founded Foster's Service in Georgetown, WA (now Foster's Frame & Axle) and T 'n' W Pumps in Georgetown, WA (now Foster & Snyder in Pingree, ND).

The business was purchased by Tom Foster and then Harvey Foster, both nephews of Warren. Tom is now retired in Arizona. Harvey moved to Seattle in 1979 to go to work for Warren in his frame and axle business. This knowledge of front ends has been very helpful in diagnosing steering problems.

Harvey worked at the frame and axle shop for 6 1/2 years before joining Tom at Red-Head. Harvey has built and tested between 43,000 and 47,000 steering gears in the past 21 years. This business has had and continues to have a number of other great employees, all family members.

Why we carry Red Head Steering Gears.....
As anybody that deals with us on a regular basis knows already...we want the best for our customers. As most people with a Dodge truck realize, the stock steering gear box leaves a lot to be desired. It was no different on our 2005 Dodge (3 gearboxes in the first 25,000 miles) or our 2007 Dodge (3 gearboxes in 75,000 miles). We have been searching for the answer to the gearbox dilemma and after testing a few other aftermarket boxes have settled on Red Head as being the best. Steering is smooth, effortless AND they are built to last. But it doesn't stop with upgraded Dodge boxes, they build upgraded boxes for nearly every application and we've had nothing but positive feedback on every unit. Red Head gets our Seal of Approval!

More than one steering box in 08 need to specify for customers

I would reconsider

"The guys service at red head are great but their product is not I have had 3 boxes the first one pulled very bad to the left got the second one and it was awesome I loved it except it was pouring fluid out of the input shaft seal so I got the third box mind you now I'm 8 hours of labor and about 100 dollars in fluid I get the third box in and now this one is loose and will not return to center I'm very un happy with these guys."

Liliana R. (1/5)

I would recommend to anyone needing a new gearbox

"This thing is way beefier than the stock gearbox. Takes the slop right out of the steering, feels super solid out of the box. Takes two people to out on cuz it's not light by any means."

Caroline (5/5)

I would buy this product again and recommended it.

"Completely upgraded and easy installation."

Tami R. (5/5)

Nothing but the BEST for me

"My truck steered terrible. Yes, it was the steering box. After talking with my friends at Diesel Power Products I decided to go all in and get the Extreme duty gear box. They have a cheaper part but I decided to get the best. Anyways my shop did the install for me, and I'm blown away by the improvement. My truck drives like a sports car (almost). Really one hand is all that's necessary, whereas before I was using both hands and still it was difficult to drive in a straight line. Also, she now returns to center all by herself."

Chrystal S. (5/5)

Awesome product

"Makes my 08 f250 diesel with 175000 miles on drive like new again"

Q&A

I have a 2009 F-350 with 34-in tires and a 5 or 6-in lift (not exactly sure as I did not install the lift myself) would I need the extreme steering box or just the regular?
Either or will work great on that application. We normally recommend the extreme duty to folks running 37in tires and larger. -Sands
How do I know for sure that this will fit my truck. I know that Ford had two different Pitman Arms. One was a 32 spline and the other a 36 spline. Other than counting the splines on my gearbox how do I know that this box will fit.
