Description
If your steering needs an upgrade from running oversized tires, or offroading, or your stock gearbox is just simply worn out and you demand nothing but the best, then a Red-Head gearbox should be your next move. While the standard Red-Heads we offer outperform the stock box in every way, their Extreme Duty models are built to handle anything you can throw at them while still being completely suitable for a daily driver with stock-sized tires. Featuring many of the same upgrades as the standard Red-Head box for improved steering, the Extreme Duty models feature a larger internal piston, as well as a larger sector shaft compared to the standard models. The larger piston means that more fluid can be displaced, providing easier "push and pull" of your steering linkage. As far as the shaft, bigger is nearly always better in terms of strength, so you're less likely to twist or break the shaft even under the harshest of conditions. The sector shaft will taper down to the stock size, however, so you're able to retain your existing pitman arm. This is a major advantage, especially for those with lifted trucks with dropped pitman arms, as you will not have to change your pitman arm. IMPORTANT NOTES: You have the option for us to include a pre-paid return label with the shipment for ease of returning your core. With this option, you will merely need to drop the re-packaged core with the accompanying shipping label at a FedEx drop-off. Otherwise, it will be your responsibility to supply your means of returning the core. Pre-paid return label option is only applicable to the lower 48 contiguous United States. Please contact us if you have any questions. Cores with broken shafts or cases will receive partial or no core refund.

About Red-Head Steering Gears Inc.
Browse Red Head Steering Gears Online by Make, Model, and Year. One of the most prevalent issues with heavy duty, diesel powered trucks, especially as they accrue some miles, is sloppy steering. And its no wonder, most of us install larger tires, haul a considerable amount of weight, periodically use them offroad, and even put snowplows on the front. All of these put considerable stress on your steering components. All of those stresses coupled with the fact that the OEM steering gears, or basically anything you find at your local parts store, could be considered absolute garbage means that the majority of us are driving around with loose, wandering steering that must be constantly corrected in order to keep the truck in your lane. That is, unless youve upgraded your Cummins, Powerstroke, or Duramax with a Redhead!

Red-Head Steering Gears was founded in 1981 by Seattle area automotive entrepreneur, Warren Foster, who also founded Foster's Service in Georgetown, WA (now Foster's Frame & Axle) and T 'n' W Pumps in Georgetown, WA (now Foster & Snyder in Pingree, ND).

The business was purchased by Tom Foster and then Harvey Foster, both nephews of Warren. Tom is now retired in Arizona. Harvey moved to Seattle in 1979 to go to work for Warren in his frame and axle business. This knowledge of front ends has been very helpful in diagnosing steering problems.

Harvey worked at the frame and axle shop for 6 1/2 years before joining Tom at Red-Head. Harvey has built and tested between 43,000 and 47,000 steering gears in the past 21 years. This business has had and continues to have a number of other great employees, all family members.

Why we carry Red Head Steering Gears.....
As anybody that deals with us on a regular basis knows already...we want the best for our customers. As most people with a Dodge truck realize, the stock steering gear box leaves a lot to be desired. It was no different on our 2005 Dodge (3 gearboxes in the first 25,000 miles) or our 2007 Dodge (3 gearboxes in 75,000 miles). We have been searching for the answer to the gearbox dilemma and after testing a few other aftermarket boxes have settled on Red Head as being the best. Steering is smooth, effortless AND they are built to last. But it doesn't stop with upgraded Dodge boxes, they build upgraded boxes for nearly every application and we've had nothing but positive feedback on every unit. Red Head gets our Seal of Approval!

Worn out steering to better than new

"The old steering box after 200K on the original with a 6 inch lift was saying "I'm tired Boss. " The only replacement I could considered was a RED-HEAD EXTREME DUTY STEERING GEAR BOX for my 2008 Ford F250 XLT SD. Plenty of power for 35" tires and easy to install."

Jacob C. (5/5)

Best money spent

"I blew multiple steering boxes in a year due to all the offroad driving I do. Once I got the Redhead installed I've not had any problems at all. Wish I would of done it sooner. I'll be installing one in all of my trucks."

Darrik W. (5/5)

Best decision I ever made

"My 2005 F250 Diesel SD has always been hard to steer. Almost sold the truck because I was tired of it, especially on the highway. Now it steers like my wifes Ecosport. Makes the whole truck seem brand new. I won't sell it now! An honest review from an honest guy."

Donald W. (5/5)

Great product!!!

"Great product makes your truck feel like a brand new vehicle has no problem turning with 37 inch tires. If you’re considering buying it!! Buy it you won’t regret it"

Cameron B. (5/5)

Heavy duty

"I went from having to use two hands to turn the wheel to setting a finger on the wheel and turn it. Turning 37” tires is easy now."

James D. (5/5)

Great buy.

"This Is a great buy."

Santiago G. (5/5)

Very satisfied

"The red head gear box made a huge difference in my steering. My factory on had a little slop in it. Know it is good and tight."

Al (5/5)

I would definitely buy this again

"I bought this for my '05 F350 that I am running 35's on. The old stock steering box was really laboring to turn the wheels. I installed the extreme duty box and all I can say is WOW!!! Huge improvement over the stock box. Not only did improve the ease of turning the wheels but it also made a huge improvement in the responsiveness of the entire steering. I would highly recommend this AMERICAN MADE product to anyone thinking about getting a new steering box. It may be more money than an OEM box but well worth the money"

Reggie (5/5)

Will do business here again!

"Put the 6 bolt steering gear on my 07' F250 and so far it's working fantastic. It's a part time driver, and it totes my 36' RV. Certainly made a difference in dragging that trailer. Thanks for the great service and prompt delivery."

Alek (5/5)

Handles like new, again

"Made a huge difference in the drivability of my work truck"

Q&A

I got a 2005 f250 with a 6.0 engine and a 8” lift kit running 37x13.50R20, which gear box do I need the standard RedHead one or the extreme duty one?
Depends on what you do with the truck. If it is 100 percent highway truck you can do the standard duty box no problem. If you do a considerable amount of offroad then you can get the Extreme duty, that would be the better option. -Sands
What are the hydraulic assist ports you are referring to??
We cover that in the description, but they are 2 additional ports for a aftermarket hydraulic ram assist steering kit. It is not stock, it is an aftermarket add on. And not a common one. -Sands
Will this be compatible with my 05 dually ?
If it is a F350 Dually pickup yes it would be compatible.-Sands
I have a 2006 f250 6.0 with an 8 inch lift on 38×15.5 inch tires and I have a lot of play in my steering wheel (pretty sure the steering gear box has gone bad) so I need a new gear box, would this fit as a replacement and would this be the best steering box for my application.
Yes it would fit your app and if there was a best box for your application it would certainly be that one. SA
