Description
They finally did it! That's right, Dodge may finally be admitting to the issues with their gearboxes for the 2003-2008 HD Rams. Dodge/Mopar has released a gearbox upgrade for the 2003-2008 2500 and 3500 Rams that comes complete with an extreme duty gear box, pitman arm, and upper tie rod. This is one of the beefiest steering boxes we've seen. The first thing you notice when you just LOOK at this box is the HUGE sector shaft, like nothing we've seen before! This sector shaft coupled with the upgraded internals will help to eliminate the Dodge steering wander issues that have plagued them for years. If you are running a lift kit that requires a dropped pitman arm, you will have to replace your existing pitman arm with one designed for this larger gear box. Also, if you have a steering box brace, you have several options as the original box will not work with this box. First, you can just take it off as in many cases, you will no longer need it with the beefier box. Secondly, you can order an entirely new brace designed to work with this steering box. And finally, you can order a new sector shaft extension nut designed to work with the larger sector shaft, and in most cases, you will also need to reposition the bearing capture plate which involves cutting it off and re-welding it in the proper place. And as always, if you have any questions about proper fitment with your particular application give us a call.

The name œMopar was originally coined in 1937 to launch Chryslers line parts and accessories that all start with antifreeze. The actual name œMopar came about from œmotor and œparts, pretty creative huh?! Well, maybe not that creative, but the name has stuck this entire time and become a household name in the automotive industry.

Mopar Steering Box Upgrade Kit 03-08 Ram HD 68170214AB

"Works awesome! Can definitely feel the difference."

Unfortunately, did not last long

"I was looking forward to running this steering box combined with the 4th gen T-style Mopar tie rod assembly on my 06 Cummins. After about 2 years and barely 6k miles, the box is no good. I only drive my truck when I need it so it sits most of the time. With installing this box, I installed the ZF pump with new lines, PS cooler and fluid. I was having significant amount of play in the box which is aggravating since you have to spend $1k to only get one year warranty. Since seeing my box is out of warranty, I decided to snug up the adjuster on the box. Unfortunately, I could not get it to budge. Ended up taking the box out and having to double nut the adjuster screw since it takes a flat head to adjust. (M14x1. 5 if anyone has the same issue) By the time the play was out of the box, I would bind halfway through its cycle from 'lock to lock'. Reinstalled into the truck and had to make further adjustments so ensure there was no binding. By the time the box had no bind, I was back to where I was before removing the box. Hard to justify paying another $1k for a PSC or Redhead box. PS: no issues with Diesel Power Products. Just my honest review of this mopar box. 11/2022 purchase date Order # 853321"

Caution Disappointment

"Huge disappointment is all I can say ordered this box in November so 5 months ago after reading many raving reviews here and on the dodge forums. I have made many adjustments the the box and none have resulted in resolving my steering slip issues (and yes I have replaced everything between the wheels and I mean everything."

"I highly recommend this mopar steering big box to anyone with a dodge My truck drives great along with other suspension system modifications"

Eric S. (5/5)

WOW! I must say that

"WOW! I must say that I'm pretty impressed with the upgraded steering gear to my 06 Ram. Night and day difference! Together with the new SuspensionMaxx end links, it is just simply a different truck now - a better, safer truck. I didn't realize just how unsafe it was to drive this big truck with the T steering and the old, beat up, puny stock gear. Every pothole held the potential to send me careening off the road. Now I blow through unexpected bumps with hardly a blip felt in the wheel and tires tracking straight ahead. How did I drive the last 12 years without it?!"

Sean M. (5/5)

Beware

"Iv had this box on my 06 4x4 now for nearly a year and its a huge disapointment. I thought maybe the 1 plus inches of steering wheel play could be adjusted out over time but I was wrong. The input shaft of the box still has alot of play without moving the pitman arm. I'v adjusted the screw in several times untill there is no steering feed back and then need to back it off untill it returns properly. All this adjusting did nothing to take out the inch or more out of the steering slop. I'v replaced everything between the hubs, T drag link, bushings on the track bar, Steering shaft damper are bushing-ed and more. These reviews here are what prompted me to get this mopar box but it did little to nothing to get the slop out of the steering. The only noticable plus for this box was it takes less to turn the wheel in and out of turns. But that wasn't the issue in the first place. As far as the purchase here, it was a good experience dealing with their delayed core charge. I will buy here again. Just nothing with a Mopar label on it."

Beast compared to stock

"I purchased this as an upgrade to my steering on 06 3500, as the stock pump was beginning to STB. This thing is a beast compared to the stock! Was a good price and really liked the Core Defer option. Got rid of the steering gear stabilizer that I had installed on the stock one - and has been good ever since! Solid steering."

2006 Ram 5. 9 - Drives like a new truck!!

"Bought this and the MOPAR 09 STEERING UPGRADE KIT. This steering box makes my old redhat steering box look like a joke, it is beefy. The new pitman arm is keyed and will be off by 10 degrees when the wheels and steering wheel are dead straight, this is normal."

AlexV (5/5)

Great OEM Product

"Huge upgrade to the factory box. 10/10 recommend this over any other steering box."

Nicholas B. (5/5)

Works

"Gearbox was really tight when first installed, i even called asking if it was normal and maybe my power steering pump was week. Got great advice from tech support and after a few weeks its become just a nice and firm. Still have a bit more bump steer feedback then i think it should and even more than the worn out 4 bolt i replaced it with. But it does have a nice firm feel now after some use."

Q&A

I have a ‘06 with the upgraded T-style steering kit. Will this kit work with it? What other upgrades are required to have smooth steering? Lines, steering pump?
This gearbox upgrade will work with the T style upgrade on a 2006 Ram truck.
what size nut is used for pitman arm.
The size for the nut is typically a 33 mm (about 1 5/16). You can reuse your factory pitman arm nut with the Mopar upgrade steering box. The sector shaft size and threads are the same as stock. Just make sure the nut and threads are in good shape and torque it properly when reinstalling.
Is the shipping and label included with purchase for the core return or is that at the buyers expense/ additional?
Thanks for asking, the core return shipping is the buyers responsibility on most of our products with core charges. We do offer a choice of adding a printed return label as an easier option at checkout.
This is a upgrade from the original one on the truck so the core will not match the new on would you still get the core refund back
Yes your original 4 bolt steering gear box will work as a core.
Hi I have a 2006 dodge with a 6inch lift what pitman arm is going to be compatible with this box that also works with the 6inch lift?
Great question, Kelly. The sector shaft for the Mopar Steering Box Upgrade will use a pitman arm from a 2009-2013 2500/3500. I recommend the 2009-2013 option offered by Carli. Here is a link for that pitman arm. Please make sure to select the 2009-2013 year range option in the drop down. https://www.dieselpowerproducts.com/p-15928-carli-pitman-arm-for-6-suspension-lift-03-13-dodge-ram-2500-3500.aspx
