Installation & Break-In The Stage 2 is designed as a drop-in replacement on most engines. Colt Cams recommends always checking valve clearances before installing any camshaft and turning the engine over by hand before starting it to verify proper clearances and cam timing. Because the 7.3L Powerstroke uses roller tappets, a traditional camshaft break-in procedure is not required. However, Colt Cams recommends performing a break-in procedure as an additional measure that may help promote component longevity. Apply cam lube to the cam lobes, lifter faces, distributor gears, and oil pump gears. Oil the bearing journals and lifter barrels, then run the engine at approximately 1,800–2,000 RPM for 18–20 minutes. Important: Always verify valve clearances and proper cam timing before starting the engine. Actual performance results will vary depending on engine condition, turbocharger, tuning, fueling, and other supporting modifications.
