The 2.8L Duramax LWN engine, introduced in the 2016 model year for mid-size GM trucks like the Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon, brought diesel power to a segment that had long gone without it in North America. While this engine had been around in other global markets under different names, 2016 marked the first time it was tuned and reworked to meet U.S. emissions and performance standards, making it the official debut of the LWN in North America.
So, what sets the LWN apart from its global counterparts and other diesel options on the market? For starters, the 2.8L Duramax offers a solid 369 lb-ft of torque and 181 horsepower, giving it impressive towing and hauling capabilities for a compact diesel. When properly equipped, it can tow up to 7,700 lbs, putting it on par with some full-size gas trucks. It features a variable-geometry turbocharger for better low-end torque, a high-pressure common rail fuel system, and an advanced EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) setup paired with a diesel particulate filter and SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) system to keep emissions compliant.
To achieve this balance of power and efficiency, GM engineered the LWN with a cast-iron block, aluminum cylinder head, and a forged steel crankshaft, combining strength with weight savings. It's a DOHC four-cylinder design with four valves per cylinder, allowing for efficient airflow and combustion.
