Suspension & Steering Components for 1983–1987 Ford 6.9L and 7.3L IDI Trucks

Between 1983 and 1987, Ford’s 6.9L and 7.3L IDI trucks saw meaningful improvements in suspension and steering design, giving them better handling, more comfort, and greater durability for everyday driving and heavy work. Power steering became more common, especially on higher-trim and heavy-duty models, making these classic diesels far easier to maneuver on the road or jobsite.

The Twin I-Beam suspension on 2WD trucks and Twin Traction Beam (TTB) setup on 4x4 models offered smoother performance and improved off-road capability, though precision handling under heavy loads wasn’t their strong suit. Ford strengthened steering gear boxes and linkages during this era for improved durability, especially when hauling or towing.

They also added steering dampers to 4WD models to help absorb road feedback and vibration — but age and use have taken their toll. Common issues like steering play, worn tie rods, weak ball joints, and leaking power steering pumps can all make your truck harder to drive and less stable under load.

To restore or upgrade performance, consider the Red Head steering gear box, which eliminates play and tightens steering feel, giving your IDI a more precise, confident response. For a smoother, more controlled ride, Bilstein B6 shock absorbers do an excellent job of softening bumps and improving control across all terrains.

If you frequently tow or haul, LongHorn Fab traction bars are a great addition — improving traction, preventing axle wrap, and increasing rear stability under load. Meanwhile, Sulastic rear leaf shackles help absorb vibration and soften ride harshness, especially in trucks that see daily work and constant exposure to the elements.

Many classic Ford trucks still use the solid front axle with leaf springs that made them so dependable, but over time, sagging springs and rough unloaded ride quality can become a problem. For a modern fix, Pacbrake air spring assist kits are an excellent choice. These kits support the leaf springs, reduce sagging, and can be adjusted for loaded or unloaded driving — keeping your truck level, stable, and comfortable no matter what you’re hauling.

Why Upgrade or Maintain Your IDI Suspension & Steering?

  • Restore Handling & Stability: Replace worn shocks, bushings, and steering gear boxes.

  • Improve Ride Comfort: Upgrade to Bilstein or Sulastic components for smoother performance.

  • Enhance Load Control: Add traction bars or air assist kits for better towing and hauling.

  • Reduce Steering Play: Red Head steering boxes eliminate looseness and improve precision.

  • Durable Construction: Components built for classic Ford strength and long-term reliability.
