What Is The Big 3 Upgrade
It is an upgrade of the three major current cables: The alternator positive cable that runs to the positive terminal of the battery, the negative battery cable that runs from the battery to the vehicles chassis and the chassis grounding cable that runs to the engine block. While originally popularized in the car audio world to support high-powered sub/amp systems, this upgrade is also beneficial for powering lights, winches, air compressors and other high-load accessories. The increased efficiency of current circuits, combined with better grounding, can keep your rig running smoothly.
Notes on cable end choices
Picking the correct alternator positive stud size is important, not only for fitment but for ease of installation.
- If you have a stock alternator you will have a 1/4" battery positive charging stud.
- If you have upgraded your alternator you may have either a 3/8" or 5/16" stud.
- It is always best practice to measure and be sure.
As far as battery terminal are concerned it's a bit of personal opinion.
- Factory style terminals work just fine and flow plenty of current however, not the most ascetically pleasing and can occasionally be a pain to add circuits and clean.
- Military style terminals are just what you'd expect, they do the job efficiently without issues and are easy to maintain and easy to add circuits as long as you have room to add in 1 of 2 spots. Clean and simple, no muss no fuss.
- Billet screw style terminals look good and do a great job. Most of these are modular and adding circuits down the road is easy to do with multiple mounting points. Show and go in one package, what's not to like.
