If your steering needs an upgrade from running oversized tires, offroading, or your stock gearbox is just simply worn out and you demand nothing but the best, then a Red-Head gearbox should be your next move. While the standard Red-Heads we offer outperform the stock box in every way, their Extreme Duty models are built to handle anything you can throw at them while still being completely suitable for a daily driver with stock-sized tires.
*IMPORTANT SEE APPLICATION NOTES BELOW.
Featuring many of the same upgrades as the standard Red-Head box for improved steering, the Extreme Duty models feature a larger internal piston, as well as a larger sector shaft compared to the standard models. The larger piston means that more fluid can be displaced, providing easier "push and pull" of your steering linkage. As far as the shaft, bigger is nearly always better in terms of strength, so you're less likely to twist or break the shaft even under the harshest of conditions. The sector shaft will taper down to the stock size, however, so you're able to retain your existing pitman arm. This is a major advantage, especially for those with lifted trucks with dropped pitman arms, as you will not have to change your pitman arm.
HYDRAULIC STEERING ASSIST PORTS OPTION:
Red-Head offers a porting option for those who are either already running a hydraulic assist steering, or plan to in the future. If you choose to make this upgrade to the box (from the drop-down menu), your gearbox will come with two pre-drilled and tapped ports with plugs. For clarification, hydraulic assist is NOT something your vehicle would have come from the factory with, rather it is an upgrade that adds a hydraulic ram to the steering linkage to aid in steering. Most vehicles do NOT have this option, thus if you are unsure if you have it, you probably do not.
