As air is compressed in your engine as a result of turbocharging and revolutions of your engine, a vast amount of heat is given off. For those with a pyrometer (EGT) gauge, you know how quickly heat can be generated at the engine's outlet (the turbo). A turbo blanket acts as a thermal barrier to protect components in your engine bay from this extremely hot ambient heat. Secondly, turbo blankets can, in fact, improve the performance of your turbo. Due to simple physics, the hotter a gas is, the more it will expand, and since a turbo does not necessarily have the ability to expand with the gasses themselves, the gasses must evacuate themselves faster. Hence, by keeping the hot air inside of the turbo instead of allowing it to dissipate, it will speed up the velocity of the turbine. And finally, there is the obvious benefit that they look cool when you pop the hood!
