Adding horsepower to a diesel is actually relatively simple, at least up until a certain point. That said, up until a certain point or certain amount of abuse, some of the "hard parts" of the truck may start to show signs of fatigue, and the first one on most people's minds is the transmission, and for good reason. A great example is undoubtedly the most upgraded truck, a 5.9L Cummins in any year. All of those trucks had one variation or another of a four speed (except manual transmissions, of course). It all started with the 518, then the 47RH, followed up by a 47RE, and finally a 48RE. And all of them suffered from inadequate torque converter lockup and overheating issues. Sure, you could wait until it blows then open up the bank account and replace it, but why not put in a little bit of preventative maintenance to keep those temps down? One of the most popular upgrades is a deep transmission pan to increase fluid capacity, but how about an upgraded cooler to replace that bug-filled thing behind your grill that has all of the fins folded flat? Or lets talk about the newer trucks that feature a bypass valve to make transmission fluid bypass the cooler until it warms up. Great idea, but it fails, causing NO fluid, no matter the temperature to bypass. Guess what, they have a fix for that too.
