The majority of modern-era diesels utilize high pressure fuel injection pumps, typically a Bosch CP3 or CP4, to pressurize fuel before being sent to the fuel injectors. These pumps run at very high pressures (in excess of 20,000 psi) to create proper atomization of the fuel for optimum power and efficiency. As power is increased to the engine, additional fueling is being commanded and will reach a point where the factory pump cannot supply sufficient fuel. As opposed to building higher output single pumps, ATS has taken the stance of equipping vehicles with dual pumps so as to not overburden a single pump.
