The 3.0L EcoDiesel was first released as an available engine in model year 2014 Ram 1500's and Jeep Grand Cherokees in an effort to bring a true light duty diesel to market that was capable of incredible fuel economy (27 MPG's on the early generations, and up to 32 on the later generations!). The 3.0 diesel engine is manufactured by VM Motori and earned honors in Ward's "10 Best Engines" for three consecutive years. The initial release featured a modest 240 horsepower and 420 foot pounds of torque, but gave reasoning as to the phenomenal MPG ratings. Upon the initial release, we at Diesel Power Products jumped at the opportunity and were fortunate enough to have two half-ton Rams and even a Jeep Grand Cherokee to find out what these rigs were all about. In stock form, they were all pretty "tame" and predictable as one would expect, but the good news is that all were easily upgradable for more power and the best part is that the fuel economy actually improved even further! While you may not want to haul a triple axle fifth wheel with one of these trucks, they can put in some serious work and make great as a commuter vehicle.

Find all the diesel performance parts you need from suspension upgrades to complete systems, cold air intakes, exhaust kits and more. We carry a variety of items to get your EcoDiesel running just the way you want it! Don't get suck with stock and give your truck the power it deserves.

As always, if you have any questions about your EcoDiesel, feel free to give us a call or send an e-mail to [email protected] and we would be happy to assist.

ECODIESEL FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:

Q: I've read about issues with the unpinned timing gear causing engine damage around 100,000 miles. Is this accurate and is it still an issue with the 2020+ models?
A: Unfortunately, this was an issue on the 2014-2018 model years. The timing gear could slip and cause valve to piston engine damage once incremental engine wear began. Fortunately, the 2020+ engine was a ground up change and features an updated timing gear design.

Q: I previously owned a heavy duty Cummins powered Ram but decided I didn't need that much truck, so downsized to a half ton Ram with an EcoDiesel. I really like it (especially the fuel economy), but when I put anything heavy in the bed or tow, the rear suspension squats quite a bit. What can I do to fix this?
A: True, this truck being a half ton, it does not have as much load carrying capacity as a 2500 or 3500. Plus, these trucks also feature rear coil springs as opposed to leaf springs. Fortunately, there are simple to install upgrades that will help to maintain a level stance. The most popular upgrade is to install air bags to the rear suspension. These are adjustable from 0-100psi of air pressure typically and will prevent the "squat" effect you're getting. To make it simple to change air pressure, many people opt to install an onboard air compressor that ties into the system, which delivers in-cab adjustability so you can literally change air pressure in the air bags from within the cab, driving down the road!

Q: Is the diesel engine in the Ram 1500's made by Cummins like the HD Rams?
A: No, the EcoDiesel is manufactured by VM Motori.

Q: How do I make the engine and exhaust sound better? I can barely hear the engine.
A: The factory air intake system is considerably restrictive, so beyond inhibiting the performance, it also dampens the incoming air charge and any sound from the turbo. By upgrading to a cold air intake, you'll get a nice turbo sound plus the added performance gains. Secondly, the factory exhaust system has numerous restrictions. While a DPF back exhaust system won't give you the sound of an older 5.9L Cummins, it definitely adds some rumble to your EcoDiesel.

Q: Do you offer anything to increase the fuel economy?
A: Absolutely! As mentioned above, adding a cold air intake will help, as well as a performance programmer, and changing all of the fluids to a high quality synthetic, such as Schaeffer's, can all have incremental positive impacts to your fuel economy. If you'd like specific recommendations on what we would recommend, please contact us, we'd be happy to steer you in the right direction.

Q: When I step on the throttle, there's a noticeable lag, is something wrong with my truck?
A: No, nothing is inherently "wrong" with your truck. This is very common on any modern vehicle, and more pronounced on turbocharged engines, and its due to the "drive by wire" system that has no physical throttle linkage assembly. The good news is there are numerous aftermarket manufacturers that produce plug-and-play devices that ramp up the signal being sent from your throttle pedal to the ECM, significantly minimizing this lag.
