For some, 2019 was a sad year as it was the end of an era. Until model year 2018, Ram was the only light duty diesel manufacturer to still produce a manual transmission equipped truck, but that all ended with the release of the 5th Generation Rams. That said, Ram has made available several options in automatic transmissions to properly support your Cummins.
As with previous years, the 68RFE comes as standard equipment and the only available option under a Ram 2500. But for those that opt for a 3500, you'll have the option to upgrade to the High Output Cummins engine, which will upgrade the transmission to an Aisin ASC69RC, the same manufacturer which produces the AS69RC transmission found in the Cab and Chassis model Rams, though slightly different still.
Fortunately, the 68RFE iteration, while technically not able to support the power of its Aisin counterpart, has had over a decade in the hands of the aftermarket, meaning upgrades are abundant. Some of the biggest shortcomings of these are due to the inadequate line pressure and torque converter lockup control that allows for excessive clutch slippage, especially as performance upgrades increase the power being sent through the transmission. Another major failure found on both the 68RFE's and Aisin models beginning in 2013 is a factory thermal bypass that is known to fail, causing the transmission to overheat. As always, the aftermarket offers up some great upgrades to alleviate the smallest, or largest of issues with these transmissions.
We offer everything from complete transmission packages to support over 1000 horsepower, to heavy duty billet torque converters, upgraded valve bodies, or even deep sump transmission pans to keep everything running cool. As always, if you are uncertain as to what products are best for you, do not hesitate to give us a call and we would be more than happy to help.
