With the release of the 5th Gen Rams came some upgrades to the axles and differentials, as well. Sit down, no, Ram didn't abandon their relationship with the tried and true AAM they originally adopted in 2003 model years. For most models, the changes are subtle to include reduced pinion angles to lessen harmonics and a new cast differential carrier that reduces weight by over fifteen pounds.
But for the Ram 3500's boasting the Max Tow Package, you'll get a welcome surprise with a massive 12" rear axle featuring 4-1/4" axle tubes. Not only is this behemoth of an axle huge, it featured an o-ring style axle seal and a heavy duty limited slip carrier for maximum towing confidence.
