You’ve heard the saying, “They don’t make them like they used to!” haven’t you? It is true, that trucks back in the mid to late 80s were built differently. Although they were built to last, everything has a shelf life and everything needs attention eventually. For example, the Dana and Sterling axles were super beefy, but they did have their problems.
Many of the Dana 44 axles were great for light work, but under heavy stress, axle failures became synonymous. As for the Dana 60 equipped models, it has been said they wear ring and pinion gears out which isn’t good for a truck that is needed to work. Some of the later Sterling model differentials were commonly found leaking.
While the axles and differentials in these trucks were generally durable for their time, heavy-duty use, off-roading, or again components led to common issues. Luckily we have a plethora of upgrades for this department to get your 6.9L IDI back on the road stronger than ever.
For those of you looking for aesthetics, you can’t go wrong with a better-looking differential cover. We offer both Mag-Hytec and Banks Power brand covers that not only look better but also feature a larger fluid capacity and cooling fins improving performance. For those looking to prevent failure or fix a dow rig, we have you covered too.
For the Dana 60-equipped F-350 guys and gals out there, you can scoop up Yukon Gear & Axle’s 35-spline front axle kit. This would replace your inner and outer axles for both sides, Yukon Super Joints, and hardware, all while being constructed by high-tensile strength 4340 Chromoly.
A common issue with factory locking hubs was the disengagement under high torque load. By upgrading to a set of Dynatrac DynaLoc hubs, you’re unlocking three times the strength, a trimmed-down design decreasing impact with rocks and obstacles, and an easy bolt-on installation to improve your 6.9L IDI.
