Tailgate theft.
In some (typically suburban) areas, criminals have been making money by stealing complete pickup truck tailgates and selling them to shady repair shops. As usual the criminals make out well, as repair shops are known to pay a pretty penny for such quality parts.
While tailgate theft is not overly popular due to the complexity of stealing a full-sized tailgate, some suburban newspapers have reported several robberies happening each month.
To prevent the high costs of replacing an entire tailgate, some truck owners are buying tailgate locks. Some locks are pretty inexpensive and easy to install. (Of course, do the cheaper tailgate locks mean they’re easier to disassemble?)
